Language Arts

Graham Road’s literacy program is aligned with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) English Standards of Learning (SOLS), which includes reading, writing, communication, and research standards.

Literacy at Graham Road is aligned with the science of reading. It focuses on the following components of effective literacy development: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension (defined by the National Reading Panel), writing, and oral language.

Instructional routines are direct, explicit, multisensory, and sequential.  Teachers use a variety of structures to meet the needs of every individual in their classroom. This includes whole group, small group, and one-on-one instruction based on the needs of all students.
